I ALWAYS ask my players after sessions "hey, what did you like about this session? what do you wish for in the future/what can i improve?" I call this a star and wish system but honestly….. I still get anxious because my party literally doe not come back to me about anything. They NEVER give me any answers and i can ask them multiple times and if i am lucky, 2 out of 4 people tell me roughly about things they liked… It is really infuriating sometimes and makes me feel unappreciated; I am really all about communicating but my party literally does not communicate back to me and i honestly don’t know what to do anymore

You know the worst part about the story with the intervention? It’s a trope as old as time. I mean one of the most popular action series in modern cinema did it. The pursuit of revenge until it is done and you are dead, whether it be by their hands or your own… it’s incredibly depressing but it is one of two cohesive narratives based on the details, the other being cleric finds a way to save her character from herself despite the party’s lack of understanding and support. I mean it is a really compelling story if nothing else. Tragic that this person who only wanted to help and does everything to help never gets the validation they crave and it leads them to spiral into despair because they feel as if nothing they do is worth anything and they end up in a pool of their own blood in victory or defeat. I mean I’m tearing up just thinking about it. The happier but less resolute ending is that they become more confident and begin journeying/living in a way that makes them happy as they search for their own peace.

A big thing I would add to the asking for feedback bit. If you at all have the instinct to explain yourself, don't do that after getting feedback. Was a big hurdle I had to figure out the hard way.

As an atheist, I will say it does get annoying to hear about Christianity all the time. Many people of different faiths feel the same way and might get offended, too. Funny enough, even though it's usually GMs that get anxiety, I feel like I have worse anxiety as a player. I keep worrying that I'm going to ruin the GM's story, step on the other players' toes or something. My last PC backstory was a little over a paragraph and I was certain that it was too long and I keep worrying that my character talks too much. Too bad there aren't tips like "keep backstories under 1000 characters," or "Keep lines in character under 10 seconds."

I am a satanist (satanic temple) and to be fully honest not one that feels the same about christianity as other organized religions, and even I would be fully cool with a Matrix reference 😂 actually treating the bible as the fictional story it is totally fine with me 😅

The way I understood the Matt Mercer effect is rather that experienced GM's noticed a serious influx of new players coming in who then got disappointed by the game because it didn't play out like a session of Critical Role. Not new GM's who felt they had to deliver like that. Which is most likely also an issue, but still not what that effect describes.

Thank you. I've had games ruined by me having anxiety about running them and felt really ashamed for having anxiety. I worry about doing it "badly" or what I'll do if I have problem players. I do need to learn to not compare myself to others in particular, that's the really hard part lately as I am currently organising a game.

I actually think it would be better to frame the so called “Matt Mercer effect” as just The Actual Play Effect(s). One, because there are other shows out there and other DMs. Two, because it more broadly can encompass issues that might arise from actual play shows. I think there’s a few different angles to the Actual Play Effect(s). Like Crispy said, it’s mostly DMs putting pressure on themselves. But I think it can also be players putting pressure on themselves? My friend who just recently started playing DnD has watched a lot of D20 and listened to a lot of NADDPod. So they put pressure on themself to have characters as well built and well thought out arc wise as say, Ally Beardsley or Emily Axford. And I love those two players a lot! And I like actual play content. But it’s important I think for players to also acknowledge that you just need to worry about having fun and doing what’s interesting for you. You’re not a professional actor, comedian, or improvisor. You are a guy doing this for fun in your off time. When it comes to the DM end, I think something I’ve also noticed is that DMs tend to take the wrong lessons from actual play shows, or get very reactionary towards those shows and try to be the anti-Matt Mercer or anti-Brennan Lee Mulligan (Wennan Wee Wulligan, if you will) or anti-Brian Murphy. Like “this isn’t Critical Role this is REAL DnD” type shit. I’ve seen the latter come up in horror stories more and the former in my own life. I think it’s interesting when people take the wrong lessons because it shows that DMing is just such a massive skillset to develop. Don’t worry only about cool descriptions or interesting worlds. Make sure you know the rules as well lol. Anyway I have a lot of thoughts on how actual plays have effected the DnD community I guess. But I’ll end it here. TL;DR: I wholeheartedly agree with Crispy that the “Matt Mercer effect” is really DMs putting pressure on themselves if at all. I also think it’s worth discussing how actual plays can lead to players putting pressure on themselves, and how DMs can sometimes learn the wrong lessons or become extremely reactionary because of actual play shows.

The issue I have is, I do ask for feedback regularly. My players, however, never say anything negative. It's like they're doing their best not to hurt my feelings by telling me where I could improve. It's very frustrating, hahahahaha

Now he's starting to go on about "Age of Consent" when that doesn't even apply to "communications over the internet" (which includes TEXT MESSAGES) because the data cannot be contained within state lines. In fact, there's a good chance it doesn't stay within COUNTRY lines. So it is ALWAYS a Federal matter, and the Federal laws say "must be over 18", no exceptions.

I knew i was thankful for my chill dnd group that always have a fun time, taking wins with cheers all around and losses with dignity and playing out everything either way., but now I know that I am beyond lucky to have met them. Also new fears unlocked with every single story here.

I find that sometimes having food or non alcoholic drinks at the table can reduce anxiety as well as walking around the room for a bit.

It's why I bring a book to distract myself during the 5 to 10 mimute break when running a session. For me, it allows me to read into my own detriment and diagnose solutions. Hope you are doing better, Crispy, and have a wonderful day.
